Why do I do what I do? Part 2
Continuing from my previous post, today I’d like to share the reasons why I am motivated to work with couples by providing Relationship Enrichment sessions - to teach the knowledge and skills about relationships that we didn’t know or never knew we needed.
For many of us, we spent our childhood and adolescence on academic and vocational development to prepare ourselves for future jobs and careers. Extra-curricular activities, after-school tuition, weekend enrichment classes, etc. In my opinion, since relationship education is barely embedded in existing systems through structured curriculum, there had been limited ways to learn about:
Knowing and relating to ourselves with self-awareness and intrapersonal skills
Building a conscious and healthy connection with a significant, long-term romantic partner
Somehow we thought we would magically possess the ability to create our own ‘happily-ever-after’s when we enter adulthood… how realistic is that?
I see these systemic gaps and because I firmly believe in lifelong learning, I decided to offer experiential hands-on classes on relationship education to adult couples. These programs are developed by experts in the art and science of love, backed by decades of research in interpersonal neurobiology.
If we invest in courses and certifications for career progression and pay rise, how about taking lessons to improve ourselves and our significant relationships - the bonds that truly matter in life - beyond the nine-to-five grind?
It is natural for ups and downs to emerge throughout a couple’s journey together. The two main contributors that typically arise are:
Individual traits (i.e. temperament, communication style, cultural differences, family upbringing)
Big transitions (i.e. getting engaged and married, purchasing a home together, becoming parents)
Like a consultant, I want to encourage couples to care for their relationship like a business - by looking after the ongoing BAUs (day-to-day personal habits and learned skills that shape how we conduct ourselves and show up for our partners), and by preparing for the mega projects (life-changing decisions and transformations that shakes and shapes our identities and sense of reality).
As such, my wish is to help individuals to know and embrace themselves for who they are, and to support couples in forming conscious and lasting partnerships. I hope my classes will pave the way for personal and collective growth in individuals and couples through the ever-evolving practice called: relationships.
